Fast forward to 2124, one hundred years from today. Something amazing has happened. There is no more gender inequality, no more gender pay gap, and no more people having to conform to oppressive expectations about how to look or to behave. Our forests have been saved. Our fishing has become sustainable. Our consumption patterns have become less wasteful. Life on land is thriving with plants preserved and animals saved. Our cities are great places to live with less pollution and more green spaces.
Can you imagine this?
Well, the University of Westminster’s BA Digital Media 3rd-year students certainly have.
Drawing from notions of speculative futures, they imagined better futures by creating artefacts for this Museum of the Future. These digital and physical artefacts represent how a problematic past (in 2024) was transformed into a better future connected to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

For the artefacts I chose to focus on Indigenous groups, how they interact with nature, and how they deal with changes caused by globalisation and modernisation. While there is now focus on how individuals and groups should be more sustainable, a lot of sustainable solutions disregard Indigenous perspectives and can sometimes even do more damage than good in terms of maintaining biodiversity and protecting ecosystems…

This piece entitled ‘Trees of life and death’ (SDG 13 climate action) was created by Ewen Cullimore in the year 2024. The aim of this is to address the climate crisis caused by the large deforestation of trees around the world and ways in which we can help to mitigate, prevent and reverse the effects it is having on our planet. My idea is that one of the quickest and effective ways in which we can counter the effects of deforestation is through the creation of carbon capturing artificial trees…
